The claim
“Voice AI ordering is now mainstream in US drive-thru franchising”
Claimed by: Industry commentary, 2026
Our verdict
Supported with scope: 'mainstream' is fair only for some large QSR systems — Wendy's (FreshAI) and Taco Bell (more than 890 U.S. drive-thrus) run voice AI in production, while McDonald's ended its IBM voice-ordering test in more than 100 U.S. drive-thrus in 2024 — and adoption below the top tier remains thin. For systems outside the top ~20 US QSRs, voice AI is still pilot-stage.
The evidence
Wendy's FreshAI, built with Google Cloud, live at 160+ U.S. restaurants as of May 2025, franchisees piloting since 2024; Wendy's has not published how many it reached against its 500+ target
Taco Bell voice AI live at more than 890 U.S. drive-thrus across 38 states, per its vendor Omilia (July 2026)
McDonald's ended its IBM automated-order-taking test in more than 100 U.S. drive-thrus in 2024 (CNBC, 17 June 2024)
How we checked
Public deployment announcements cross-checked with operator reports; scope qualification added.
